About This Place

One if by Land, Two if by Sea stands as a quintessential gem in New York City’s culinary landscape, offering an exquisite New American fine dining experience that blends sophisticated flavors with an intimate, almost magical atmosphere. Nestled at 17 Barrow Street in the heart of the West Village, this restaurant invites guests into a world where every detail—from the setting to the plate—is thoughtfully crafted to enchant and delight.

Step inside, and you are immediately embraced by the warm glow of candlelight, the gentle strains of a piano wandering through the air, and the charm of garden views that impart a serene elegance rare in the bustling city. The building itself, a historic townhouse behind a discreet facade and cobblestone street, feels like a cherished secret—a perfect backdrop for a romantic night out or a special celebration.

The cuisine is a masterful expression of New American artistry with a deliberate nod to classic techniques and seasonal ingredients. The menu is an inviting journey through remarkable dishes that tease and satisfy the palate with layers of texture and flavor. Standouts include the Individual Beef Wellington, boasting a tender center wrapped in mushroom duxelle and finished with an irresistible port reduction and truffle tapenade—an absolute must-try that reviewers unanimously praise as a highlight. The Rack of Colorado Lamb arrives perfectly cooked, paired beautifully with goat cheese polenta and a fragrant saffron lamb jus, evoking a harmony of savory richness and subtle herbaceous notes.

Seafood lovers will savor the delicate Black Sea Bass resting on a bed of black and green lentil ragu with nuanced tarragon oil, or the luxurious Maine Lobster presented atop a creamy yuzu risotto complemented by a rich lobster bisque that dances on the tongue. For lighter starters, the Italian Milk Burrata with zucchini rolls and San Marzano tomato jam offers a refreshing balance of creamy and tangy, while the Hamachi Sashimi and Seared Foie Gras appetizers lean into refined, nuanced flavors that awaken the senses.

No fine dining experience here is complete without indulging in the expertly crafted desserts and drinks. The Chocolate Soufflé with Vanilla Ice Cream delivers a sumptuous finale, pairing airy richness with cool sweetness. The cocktail menu shines just as brightly—whether your preference is a classic Old Fashioned, a vibrant Negroni, or a perfectly balanced Manhattan, each sip resonates with care and craft, notably elevated by thoughtful wine pairings curated to complement every course.

I had the pleasure of taking my wife here for our anniversary, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. From the moment I made the reservations, the staff graciously accommodated all my requests. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted at the door and assisted with our coats, setting the perfect tone. The atmosphere was enchanting, and the chef’s curated courses were nothing short of amazing, with outstanding food selections. The customer service (our waiter Albert was great) and hospitality were impeccable throughout. No complaints whatsoever—just pure delight for the evening. If you’re planning on visiting there’s a parking lot right across the street

My husband celebrated my birthday at One if by Land, Two if by Sea, and it felt like discovering a secret tucked away in the heart of New York. The location itself is so mysterious — hidden down a quiet cobblestone street, behind a beautiful old facade that feels like a portal to another world. Inside, the candlelight, soft piano music, and garden views created a setting that was intimate, elegant, and absolutely timeless. We were seated at the perfect corner table near the piano bar. To my left, a beautiful garden view framed the evening with even more charm. It felt so private and romantic — as if the city had disappeared for a night, just for us. The food was exquisite. Every dish was gorgeous and full of flavor. The Beef Wellington was divine — truly one of the best we’ve ever had. And the champagne? Effortlessly luxurious and so celebratory. The service was flawless, warm, and genuinely thoughtful. They made my birthday feel incredibly special, with every detail handled with care. A magical evening in a place that feels hidden, timeless, and full of love. Truly one of the most romantic dining experiences in the city — or anywhere

Such an incredible evening at an incredible restaurant! The staff, atmosphere, food, wine and cocktails are all perfection. Our waiter Michael was so kind and attentive to us. He even went above and beyond to give us a little tour of some of the other spaces in the venue. Kirk was so knowledgeable with the wine pairing which made the whole experience extra special and Nicky was delivering the best bread we’ve ever had with a smile on his face. We felt so welcomed and warm at this restaurant. Absolutely recommend. We can’t wait to go back!!

My husband and I went back for our anniversary. We had one of our first dates here 30+ years ago. Food, service and atmosphere still terrific! We had the chef’s menu which was a perfect tasting of their best dishes. You cannot eat here without having the beef Wellington!

Probably the most romantic restaurant we have been to in NYC. Recommend asking for the window seats overlooking the garden - so pretty. The food was good - we went for the 3 course fixed menu ($165 each) but the beef wellington was so large. Felt like we were paying for such a unnecessary portion that we ended up leaving half which felt so wasteful. We weren't coming away raving about the food and as everywhere in NYC it was expensive. You are more paying for the vibes and how romantic it is. There is live music which really added to the ambience. The service was good but felt over the top with multiple servers per table.

I booked this for our 10 year anniversary, talk about romantic, candle light dinner. The staff was right there for every move, cleaning up, taking dishes. We did the 3 course meal choice French soup, salmon, chocolate Thise were my 3 along with an "Oldest Fashioned" Every course we had was simply delicious. A lot of care goes into plating the dish and the presentation when serving it This is a 5 Star experience with a 5 Star price...worth every penny
